Liberace Foundation Grants and Scholarships Report: 1981-2011

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Today, the Liberace Foundation breaks down another wall on the way to exemplary transparency.

When I was recruited to the Board of Directors of the Liberace Foundation in 2012, I soon realized that none of the remaining board members had information as to how much money the Foundation had granted over the years.  I heard and read estimates of $3 million to close to $5 million, which would place this foundation in quite good company nationally.

Soon after the dust settled when I became Chairman of the Liberace Foundation last year, I issued a directive that the staff complete a report of all scholarships and grants ever distributed, as well as tracking down the names of all recipients, some of whom have gone on to be quite famous in the arts.  To complete this report, they would have to gather rooms full of files from three different locations, organize, calculate and digitize their findings.  It would be a monumental task.

To my delight, the staff, lead by Andreas Sparkuhl, was excited to jump in and get to the bottom of the records.  I’m thrilled with how Andreas and Billy Marino didn’t hesitate to take on the job, along with help for Dallas Reiber when she wasn’t busy helping us organize the rest of the records of the Foundation’s last 38 years.

The staff at the Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts is pleased to provide the following report of all scholarships and grants disbursed by the Foundation from 1981 to 2011.  The results were astounding.

Total grants and scholarships of nearly $6 million, to over 2600 students, at 108 schools (see below).  Additional funds remain, in endowment funds created at certain universities, requiring more investigation.

Would you know some of those students?  You certainly would.  But we’ll leave those surprises for another day.

This information is public by law, and now, finally, it is public in fact.  I am extremely proud of our team, all locals and recent UNLV grads who love the cause.  On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Advisory Board of the Foundation, I thank them for this extremely important work.

15 thoughts on “Liberace Foundation Grants and Scholarships Report: 1981-2011

  1. How nice that you undertook such an extensive job, identifying all of the scholarships that have been gifted to deserving students. Over six million dollars is very VERY impressive! The foundation clearly has helped many students over the years. The Foundation should be brought more into the limelight so that more contributions can be made to it to help more students in the future. Unfortunately when the media is filled with stories of how the museum has closed its doors people are under the false impression that the whole foundation is defunct. Congratulations Mr. Warren on the wonderful job you and the foundation are doing both to help promising students as this was Liberace’s dream, and for keeping the legacy of Liberace alive.

  2. Wonderful! I am a life long admirer of the late Liberace ! Founder, CEO -Owner of Magic Vacation Estates, Homes, Properties . Ca.,Tx.,Nv.,Hi & France –
My best to those that maintain memories and moments of a life well lived, considerate of so many . – JAnthony PEREZ

  3. Excellent job to all involved in the task and God bless Liberace and his memory for his generosity and kindness in helping out so many people. Many thanks and much gratitude also to those of you who keep his foundation going like a fine tuned machine.

  4. My Mother Estelle Liberace Forlano was Lee’s and George’s first cousin. My father was a Dentist and did Lee’s teeth when he was a struggling musician. He would come to our house every year that he played in the Latin Casino in New Jersey.
    They were both great people.

  5. This report is an excellent set of details, covering 1981 to 2011, 30 years. I read this as a total of $6 million distributed in the 30 years. I calculate the disbursements as $200,000 per year, roughly. The 990 IRS Forms would show total disbursed for the years 2012 to 2013, maybe 2014. I look forward to more light, more light.

  6. This information is great but I see some areas that are not covered. Private teachers have been the foundation for musicians of all instruments for decades. Most musicians start with private lessons, like I would teach. Liberace did benefit from private lessons I’m sure. Even teachers teaching in music stores are struggling to make enough money to live on nowadays. There is not much funding to support private teachers studios and many I know have suffered greatly trying to continue this practice. Awards to teachers across the country who have dedicated their lives to continuing private lessons would be very beneficial.

Another area that could greatly benefit would be things like the artist funds for older musicians for when they are sick or retire. As a performer, you do not have the perks most people do like retirement programs and many performers suffer greatly. I know there is a group of musicians who started the Music Makers Organization to try and help musicians get through tuff times. Those areas may not be covered under your protocol but they could definitely use help and would benefit many in the entertainment industry. Just thought I would mention them in case they might be considered.

The musician is a curious person when you look at the study of playing an instrument. A college education is not really the most necessary training in a musicians life as much as is the ability to play the instrument well and entertain although it does significantly raise the pay scale and job opportunities. Many musicians don’t seek out a college degree and even some with one struggle to make ends meet. I am glad the Liberace foundation exists and they are supporting musicians to get a degree but their training usually begins with the private teacher somewhere.

    • Thank you for the feedback. You might want to try musiciansfoundation.org and similar organizations for the needs you outline. Liberace was clear in his own intentions for his estate, and accomplished his goal. That endowment fund sunset in 2011, having awarded over $6 million on an origianl cash endowment of less than $5 million. In the future we hope to develop a second endowment fund from the successful licensing of Liberace. Meanwhile other endwment funds this foundation established at various universities continue to grant Liberace scholarships, as he planned.

  7. It would be interesting to see compensations, remuneration, expenses, et al., for the Board of Directors, as well as the investment and capital gains income. The Elvis Presley holdings were turned into a multi profitable organization with good management but seems the Liberace holdings fall short……….Probably needs more transparancy………common sense says the numbers just do not work.

  8. It would be interesting to see Jonathan Warren’s personal financials since becoming associated with all things Liberace and just how he feathered his nest with his reflected glory. I note he represents himself as an Honorary Consulate of the Principality of Monaco; when in actuality he is the Honorary Consulate of the Principality of Monaco IN LAS VEGAS. There is a world of difference between those two titles! And if his bio/vitae is not embellished, why are the Liberace holdings not greater?

    • My net worth has not changed and my income has decreased in the time I have been associated with the Liberace Foundation. I don’t own a home, nor a car less than 15 years old. Neither I nor any board member has received any compensation from or in connection to the Liberace Foundation since I have been Chairman. On the contrary, many have helped to cover costs despite inability for the Foundation to repay. We also pay no salaries to anyone else. We don’t solicit donations and limp along on ticket sales and occasional exhibits licensed. I don’t know to what part of my bio/vitae you are referring, or why it would impact Liberace holdings.
