The EMMY, TONY, BAFTA and Olivier Awarded Director signs “the greatest stage actor of his generation” to play Liberace in the UK this fall.
On September 25, 2025 stage and screen veteran Alan Cumming spent three hours over lunch at Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont, making easy work of convincing Liberace Foundation Chairman Jonathan Warren that a certain play, which Alan planned to put on stage, ought to enjoy the licensing and support of the Liberace Foundation. It will.
One year later, September 12 to October 11, 2026, West End stage legend Sir Simon Russell Beale stars as Liberace in renowned playwright Martin Sherman’s I’ll Be Seeing You, directed by Alan Cumming. A regular appearing in Les Misérables (both West End and 2012 major motion picture versions) and Cabaret, Fra Free will play opposite Beale’s Liberace, as Sherman’s portrayal of a young playwright struggling to create a play about Liberace.
Opening at Scotland’s Pitlochry Festival Theatre, where Alan Cumming serves as Artistic Director, the Highlands may see more Las Vegans at one time than ever before, opening night. Liberace board members hope the production will surprise the audience with historical content with which they may not be familiar, and may find quite astounding. The specific bit of Liberace history centers around his 1956 libel suit against London’s Daily Mirror, which had just insinuated he was gay. Cumming compares the case to the earlier similar case of Oscar Wilde, and the contrasting treatment of both protagonists after Oscar Wilde lost, but Liberace won. “It’s interesting when you think about it…[the play is] a chance for Liberace to have his say a bit more” explains Cumming.

“It wouldn’t be the first time Pitlochry saw one of its own debuts carry on in London’s West End, or Broadway,” says an optimistic Jonathan Warren, also credited as Historical Content Consultant for the play, “If ever it was to happen, I couldn’t imagine a better team to work with.”
